Time with your children
Another big welcome to the second edition of Let’s Connect.
As promised, I would be sharing vital information, stories, resources and lots more every fortnight. This week, we have a close focus on how to build connection and a sense of belonging with our children.
Do we explicitly teach our children how to disclose any concerns or worries?
I feel as a community we can all get better in this area. Teaching our children strategies to be body safe and disclose is just one aspect.
We need to dig deeper on how we can get to this point. I truly believe the pillars for ensuring our children are able to disclose comes from a foundation of connection and having a sense of belonging. This can be difficult with time commitments; however, we need to invest time, because any time spent with children is never wasted.
Not sure where to start?
Morning Routine:
Right after waking up, during breakfast, or as they’re getting ready for school. This can help set a positive tone for their day.
After School:
When they come home from school, ask them about their day. This is a good time to gauge their mood and address any issues.
Mealtimes:
Dinner or other meals can be a good time for informal conversations. It’s a relaxed setting where they might feel more comfortable opening up.
Before Bed:
Just before bedtime can be a peaceful time to check in. It’s a moment when they might be more reflective and willing to share their thoughts.
During Transitions:
Times like before or after activities or family outings can be good moments to catch up on their feelings and experiences.
When They’re Upset:
If you notice they’re acting differently or seem upset, it’s important to check in and offer support.
When They Initiate:
Sometimes, the best time to check in is when they reach out to you. Be attentive to those moments.
And as always be in the moment, pay attention to them when they are speaking to you. T-I-M-E is love.
