A Disclosure Response Framework based on my lived experience and evidence based research.
Because one safe, calm response can change a life.
You never forget the moment someone trusts you with their story. It might be a colleague who lingers after a meeting, their voice low as they share something deeply personal. Or a young child whose eyes dart before they quietly tell you something “not right” at home.
In that instant, everything stops, and your next words will be remembered for a lifetime.
BePrepared exists for that moment.
It ensures you can respond in a way that feels safe, calm, and deeply human, whether you’re supporting a child, a colleague, or a member of your community. But it’s not just about knowing what to say when someone opens up, it’s also about creating the right conditions from the start.
Creating environments where people feel safe to share, express themselves, and seek help is key. BePrepared™ prepares you with the tools and knowledge to set the right preconditions, fostering a culture of trust and emotional safety before challenging behaviours arise. It ensures you know how to approach individuals displaying changing or challenging behaviours with empathy, understanding, and confidence.
When you’re prepared, everyone feels safer.
This proactive approach leads to healthier, more resilient communities where everyone, children, adults, and colleagues, can feel heard, valued, and supported.
The BePrepared suite—comprising the BeAware, BeSlower, and BeCalmer frameworks—offers a powerful, trauma-informed foundation for supporting professionals with the skills to respond to disclosures of harm with confidence and care. Developed by John Cardamone and grounded in both his lived experience and evidence-based research, the framework aligns with best-practice principles in child protection, psychological safety, and inclusive practice.
Its accessible, step-by-step approach supports participants in cultivating environments of trust, awareness, and responsiveness. For organisations committed to safeguarding and wellbeing, this suite of frameworks provides a vital, research-aligned resource that can be used to enhance capability and foster a culture of safety and support.
“We can’t control when someone will speak up — but we can control how we respond.
That response can either start the healing… or prolong the pain.”
BeAware™ focuses on establishing the preconditions for a safe and supportive environment, ensuring that adults and children feel empowered to disclose abuse or trauma of any kind.
Analysing the preconditions within your organisation, workplace, or home is a crucial step in fostering safety and a sense of belonging.
You notice changes in a colleague’s behaviour or feel concerned about a child displaying behaviours of concern. Failing to intervene appropriately and in a timely manner can have serious repercussions.
BeSlower™ provides a structured approach, helping you make informed decisions about the next steps.
BeCalmer™ is created from my lived experience. It contacts the exact steps that I believe Survivors need to help with their healing journey and what I was fortunate to receive from my mother when I disclosed. Using it is vital because…
How we respond to a disclosure can be the difference between starting someone’s healing journey or prolonging it” – John Cardamone
Developed with the lens of lived experience, the BePrepared 3-part training program provides a framework to strengthen individual and organisational capacity to prevent, recognise, and respond to child safety concerns. By embedding BeAware, BeSlower, BeCalmer, organisations can foster cultures of safety, trust, and accountability.
The training offers a research-informed, trauma-sensitive approach that empowers professionals to approach child safety concerns with confidence. By equipping professionals and organisations to recognise and respond effectively to concerns, BePrepared aligns with national child protection priorities and contributes to safer, more accountable systems.

How an adult initially reacts when a child (or indeed another adult) discloses can impact on what happens next. Often, children are groomed to not speak out, so when they do it is critical to ‘be calm’ and respond positively.
No matter the age of the individual disclosing, it is important to calmly listen and provide support while managing the risk and making the appropriate reports to authorities. The BeCalmer Framework for responding to disclosures of child sexual abuse is a well-structured, easy to understand step by step guide for adults to effectively respond when a child speaks out.
